It is well known fact that dairy sector of our country has become a major path for livelihood to larger part of the rural population where two third comprises small, marginal and landless farmers.
it has a significant role in rural economic development. The country has produced 160.35 million ton of milk in the year 2015-16 and 75 million numbers of woman are involved in this sector while male participation is only 15 million. The woman's participation in livestock sector as a whole has been in increasing trend. Thus it may be termed as a major leader in woman's empowerment. The earned income from dairy activities is utilized by them for household requirement, construction of house, educational expenses, and financial support to cropping activities.

Role of livestock in agrarian economy is well recognized. Animal husbandry practices promote gender equity. The distribution pattern of income and employment shows that small farm units hold many
opportunities in livestock production. The growth in livestock sector is demand driven, inclusive and pro-poor. Hence, equal emphasis and more allocation in livestock sector shall be the priority for the states with agrarian economy. Improving productivity in a huge population of low productivity livestock is of the major challenge. However, potential of livestock can be harnessed only when technology, institutes, policies and financial support able to address the constraints of this sector.
