ource of India is represented by 37 well recognized indigenous breeds. Indigenous cattle in India are robust and resilient and are particularly suited to the climate and environment of their respective breeding tracts. They are endowed with qualities of heat tolerance, resistance to diseases and the ability to thrive under extreme climatic stress and less than optimal nutrition. Studies of impact of climate Change and effect of temperature rise due to global warming will negatively impact milk production. The annual loss in milk production of cattle and buffalloes due to thermal stress in 2020 will be about 3.2 million tones of milk costing more than Rs. 5000 crore at current price rate. The

Role of livestock in agrarian economy is well recognized. Animal husbandry practices promote gender equity. The distribution pattern of income and employment shows that small farm units hold many
opportunities in livestock production. The growth in livestock sector is demand driven, inclusive and pro-poor. Hence, equal emphasis and more allocation in livestock sector shall be the priority for the states with agrarian economy. Improving productivity in a huge population of low productivity livestock is of the major challenge. However, potential of livestock can be harnessed only when technology, institutes, policies and financial support able to address the constraints of this sector.
